Steelers/Chiefs Change

Due to an incoming ice storm the NFL has moved the AFC Divisional game to Sunday night on NBC.  8:20/5:20 is the new scheduled start time.  I would expect the broadcast to move from CTV to TSN as all Sunday Night Football games appeared on TSN.

Aussie Open on TSN Schedule

The first of the years grand slams begins what should be a very intriguing year for Canadian tennis fans.   Milos Raonic, third in the ATP world rankings, looks to continue the momentum from a successful end to the 2016 tour.  He has made consecutive trips to the semifinals at the Paris World Tour Masters 1000 and Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, losing to world number one Andy Murray both times.

The 2017 season started with a semifinal appearance at the Brisbane International where Grigor Dimitrov defeated Raonic 7-6, 6-2.

Raonic has had success at the Australian Open on the hard court in the last two years.  The 2015 tournament saw Raonic lose in the quarterfinals to Novak Djokovic in three sets and last year Raonic went a step further losing to Andy Murray in a five set semifinal defeat.

Raonic will open the tournament against number 70 in the world, Dustin Brown of Germany.  Raonic’s draw pits him in a potential matchup with 25 ranked Gilles Simon in the 3rd round and a potential quarterfinal versus Gael Monfils, 6 rank, or Rafael Nadal, 9 rank.

Roger Federer also makes his return after taking 6 months off the rest his left knee.  He is in a draw with Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori.

On the women’s side Eugenie Bouchard looks to start the 2017 tour off on the right note after a 2016 season mired with frustration and disarray.  She looks to recapture the play that saw her make the quarterfinals in the 2015 tournament as she begins play against Louisa Chirico of the USA.

TSN Extends MLS Broadcasting Contract

On the heels of the most successful season for the MLS on TSN, a new multi-year broadcasting rights extension was reached.  TSN will continue to broadcast all Vancouver Whitecaps and Toronto FC games along with a select number of Montreal Impact games and marquee US match-ups.

Along with the regular season slate, TSN will continue to have the rights to the MLS playoffs, MLS cup, the MLS all star game and MLS decision day.

TSN is coming off their highest ratings for MLS coverage with the Toronto FC vs. Montreal Impact eastern semifinal garnering 1 million viewers in the first leg and 1.4 million in the second leg.  The final set a MLS on TSN record, 1.5 million viewers who witnessed the Seattle Sounders defeat Toronto FC in penalty kicks in the MLS cup.

While the recently high ratings are the result of the success of the Canadian MLS teams last season, MLS soccer as a whole, is one of the fastest growing games in North America in terms of popularity.  With high attendance numbers (partly due to low ticket prices compared to the big 4 leagues) and a committed fan base the MLS is quickly establishing a foothold in the highly competitive North American sports market.

The leagues growth spurned a cumulative 90 million dollars in television contracts from ESPN, FOX and Univision.   Expansion is also on the horizon with Atlanta United and Minnesota United FC joining the league in March and Los Angeles FC set for 2018.  The future holds a team in Miami as well, with a list of potential expansion candidates on the waiting list.

As the MLS slowly enters the mainstream in the vast North American sporting landscape networks are expanding coverage and devoting more resources towards the MLS.  While  Canadian soccer fans are surely hoping for the continued success of TFC and the Impact, and a Whitecaps bounce back season, everyone should be happy for more North American footy in Canada.
